Indian shooting star of Tokyo Paralympics

30 Aug 2021, Tokyo: Shooter Avani Lekhara bagged gold medal in the R-2 women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event at the  2020 Tokyo Paralympics here on Monday.

The 19-year-old finished with a total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record, in the process she also became the first Indian woman to win a hold in either Olympics or Paralympics.

Competing in her maiden Paralympics, Avani shot 249.6 points in the R2 women’s 10m air rifle SH1 category for a Paralympic Record and equal the World Record.

Earlier, Avani who works as an Assistant Conservator of Forests in Rajasthan and trains at the JDA Shooting Range in Jaipur, shot 621.7 points to finish seventh in qualification and secure a place in the final. She has been wheelchair-bound since a road accident in 2012.

Soon after her historic achievement, Avani Lekhara dedicated her gold medal to the whole of India. “This medal is not mine, it’s for the entire country. I want to dedicate this medal to the entire country”, Avani said at the event.
