04 Aug 2021: Indian went down fighting 1-2 to Argentina in the semi-finals of women’s hockey at the Oi Olympic Stadium, on Wednesday.
Indian eves started aggressively and earned a penalty corner in the second minute of the match, which was successfully converted into a goal as a Gurjit Kaur’s drag flick found the back of the net to give India an early lead. The Indian defense and goal keeper Savita Punia managed to see off the quarter as India ended the first quarter leading 1-0.
In the second quarter, Argentina tried various variations as they looked to find the equalizer and their efforts paid off in 18th minute as Argentinian captain, Maria Noel Barrionuevo converted a penalty corner. India didn’t concede another goal as the first half ended at 1-1.
In the third quarter, Argentina continued to put India under the pump. In the 36th minute, Argentina took the lead when a drag-flick taken Maria Noel Barrionuevo got deflected into the goal after hitting the knee of Sushila Chanu. India were unable to find the equalizer despite trying hard as the quarter ended with Argentina leading India by 2-1.
Indian women gave out their all in final quarter but failed to breech the Argentine defence as ended up losing 1-2, but not winning the hearts of the entire nation.
India will now face Great-Britain in bronze medal match.
