Indian eves edge past South Africa

31 Jul 2021: Indian women’s hockey team scored a 4-3 win over South Africa in their last group match at the Oi Hockey Stadium,  here on Saturday. 

In a do or die match, forward Vandana Kataria scored a hat-trick to keep India in with a chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals. 

The first two quarters of the match followed almost the same pattern as far goal scoring is concerned. India scoring an early goal followed by a late equaliser by the South Africans was the story of the both the quarters.

In the third quarter too India took the lead, when.. found the back of the nett in minute, only to see South African’s equalise in the 39th minute. With the score reading 3-3, in the 49th minute,  Vandana Kataria successfully converted a penalty corner to score the winner. found the back of the nett. India managed to hold on the one goal advantage and record their second win of the tournament. 

Vandana Kataria became the first India women to score hat-trick in Olympic Hockey. India’s chances of reaching the knock-out stage now depend on the outcome of the match between Great Britain and Ireland.
