India lose to Belgium in Hockey semis

03 Aug 2021, Tokyo: The men’s hockey team crashed out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the semi-final after their 2-5 loss against Belgium at the Oi Hockey Stadium, here on Tuesday.

Belgium took the lead in the second minute of the game, as Loïck Luypaert managed to convert the first penalty corner into a goal.

After conceding an early goal,  Team India came back strongly courtesy goals from Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh in 7th and 9th minutes to take a 2-1 lead. The first quarter ended with the same scoreline.

Alexander Hendricxx, who has been in top goal scoring form in Tokyo 2020, scored the equaliser for Belgium in the minute. The second quarter ended at 2-2.

In the third quarter,  both the teams made some attacking moves but failed to score as the the score remained 2-2 after a goalless quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Indian skipper Manpreet Singh was issued a green card. Alexander Hendricxx scored his second goal to give Belgium a 3-2 lead. With seven and a half minutes remaining, Alexander Hendricxx scored a hat-trick in the crucial semi-final as he converted a penalty stroke into a goal and gave Rio olympic silver medallist a two goal lead. John-John Dohmen‘s goal is the dying moments shattered Indian hopes of reaching Olympic finals in men’s hockey after 41 years.

The Indian team will now play in bronze medal match on 5th August.
