CWG 2022: Priyanka Goswami walks her way women’s 10000m silver

07 Aug 2022, Birmingham: Priyanka Goswami scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walk with a silver in 10,000m event at Birmingham 2022 here on Sunday.

Goswami clocked a PB time of 43:38.83s to finished 2nd behind Jemima Montag (42:34.30) of Australia. Emily Wamusyi Ngii (43:50.86) of Kenya took the bronze medal

This was Goswami’s personal best time, while gold medallist Montag’s time was a Commonwealth games record.

The other Indian in the fray, Bhawna Jat finished 8th and last with a PB time of 47:14.13.

Harminder Singh was the first Indian to have won a medal in race walk bronze in the 20km event in Delhi 2010

Apart from her PB in the 10,000m race event, Priyanka also holds the NR in women’s 20km race walking. She had completed the distance in 1:28:45s at the race walk nationals in Ranchi last year, which had also earned her an Olympic berth in Tokyo 2020.

Before switching to athletics, Priyanka used to do gymnastics in school, however, she didn’t continue for long. She started off her journey in athletics with track events and later moved to race-walking completely.

Priyanka then went to secure a bronze medal in her race-walking debut at the 2015 National Games in Kerala. Apart from sports, fashion was the 2nd love for the Uttar Pradesh athlete.
