07 Aug 2022, Birmingham: India edged past 2018 champions New Zealand in the shootout to claim the bronze medal in the women’s hockey event at Birmingham 2022 here on Sunday.
Salima Tete scored the first goal of the match just before the half-time mark to give India the lead at the break.
With 10s left on the clock, New Zealand equalised through a penalty stroke after a kick from Navneet Kaur.
In the penalty shoot, New Zealand held a 1-0 lead at one stage. The Women in Blue made a strong comeback and finished with a 3-1 lead to clinch the bronze medal.
This was India’s third medal at the quadrennial games. At Manchester 2002, India won a gold medal. 4 years later, the women’s team clinched a silver medal. After a wait of 16 years, the women’s team has ended the country’s wait and won a bronze medal.
Earlier, the Indian team were beaten in the semifinals by Australia in controversial fashion earlier, after a clock glitch contributed to a loss on penalties after the match was drawn 1-1 after regulation time.
