06 Aug 2022, Birmingham: Avinash Sable broke the 3000m Steeplechase National Record for the record 9th time, clocking 8:11.20 to win India’s first-ever Steeplechase Medal at the Birmingham 2022 here on Saturday.
👉Avinash Sable clocked 8:11.20 to better the previous NR of 8:12.48, created at the Rabat Diamond League earlier this year.
👉Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot, the Gold Coast 2018 silver medallist and one of the leading runners from 2022, narrowly edged the Indian by 0.05 seconds to win the gold. World junior champion Amos Serem, also from Kenya, took the bronze 8:16.83.
👉Kenyan Olympic and two-time world champion Conseslus Kipruto finished sixth in the race with a time of 8:34.96.
👉Sable also won silver at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships.
👉In 2015 that Sable joined the Army’s athletics programme as cross-country runner. His natural talent was spotted by coaches and within a year, Sable helped Services finish 1st in the team competition and he finished 5th in the 2017 National Cross-Country Championships.
👉Avinash Sable’s silver winning effort today was 33 seconds better than India’s previous best performance at CWG – 8:44.35 by Elam Singh in 2010 who finished 9th.
👉This is the 9th time Sable has re-written the national record. The 26-year-old is making his debut at the Commonwealth Games.
