Bhawani Devi makes historic debut at olympics

26 Jul 2021, Tokyo: Bhawani Devi created history by defeating Nadia Ben Azizi of Tunisia by 15-3 in women’s individual Sabre Fencing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics here on Monday. 

In an excellent display of swordsmanship, Bhawani Devi raced to 8-0 lead at the break. After the break, her opponent tried to make a match but the Indian fencer was too good and finished the match in just over 6 minutes.

In Fencing, the first player to reach 15 points is declared winner. Bhawani Devi is the first Indian to participate in olympic Fencing.
