India ends 41 year Hockey medal drought

05 Aug 2021, Tokyo: The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Germany 5-4 in the bronze medal match at the Oi Hockey Stadium, here on Thursday.

Germany began the match on a positive note as Timur Oruz scored a fine field goal in the second minute of the match. The first quarter ended with Germany leading 1-0, as Indian forward line failed to breech the German defense.

Simranjeet Singh found the back of the net in the 17th minute to draw parity. Niklas Wellen and Benedikt Furk, scored in the 24th and 25th minute to gave Germany a two goal lead. However, Indian led by Manpreet Singh refused to give in as first Hardik Singh pulled one back in the 27th minute before Harmanpreet Singh score the equalizer in the 29th minute to ensure that India went into half time on level terms.

Another two goals, one each by Rupinder Pal Singh in 31st minute and Simranjeet Singh in 34th minute helped India take a 5-3 lead. The India maintained a two goal lead going into the last quarter.

Germany, tried to make a match of it in the last quarter, as Lukas Windfeder successfully converted a penalty corner in the 48th minute to reduce the deficit to 4-5. But, some fine saves from goalkeeper P R Sreejesh ensured a historic  win for India.

Prior to today, India had last won an olympic medal in hockey at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
