Mirabai ends 21 year long drought of a weightlifting medal
24 Jul 2021, Tokyo: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu made the entire nation proud by winning silver medal with a total lift of 202 kgs in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo International Forum here on Saturday.
Mirabai Chanu successfully cleared 84 kg in her first attempt and then 87kg in her second attempt. However, she failed to successfully lift 89kg in her third attempt and stood at the second spot after the completion of the snatch round.
In the Clean & Jerk, she successfully lifted 110 kg and 115 kg in her first and second attempts before failing to lift 117kg in her final attempt. However, her combined score of 202kg (87 kg + 115 kg) was enough to earn her a silver medal.
Pre-games favourite Hou Zhihui of China, who created three new Olympic records, each in Snatch, Clean & Jerk and in the overall total with lifts of 94 kgs, 116 kgs and 210 kgs respectively. While the bronze was bagged by Aisah Windy Cantika of Indonesia, as Jourdan Delacruz of USA who was at third spot after the snatch round.
It is worth mentioning that Mirabai Chanu, had failed to record her score at the 2016 Rio Olympics despite being billed as a strong medal contender five years ago too. But today is a day to celebrate her weightlifting medal. Last time, an In dian weightlifter managed a podium finish in olympics was Karnam Malleshwari in 2000 Sydney Olympics.
