Deepika moves into quarterfinals

30 Jul 2021: Deepika Kumari edged out Ksenia Perova of Russian Olympic Committee with a 6-5 win in 1/8 elimination round at the Yumenoshima Final Field, here on Friday.

Deepika, ranked, number 1 in the world, wasted no time as she downed Perova convincingly 28-25. But in the second set, Perova came back strongly to take the set 27-26 and draw parity. However, the Indian shot a 10 pointer and a couple of 9 pointers in third set to take the set 28-27. Deepika had to share the the fourth set as she failed to seal the match with the final arrow of the set and be content with one point only. 

Perova took the fifth and final set with a score of 28-25, with the scores levelled at 5-5 at the end of fifth set meant that the match went into the shoot-off. In the shoot-off, Ksenia Perova shot a seven pointer but the Deepika held her nerve and hit bullseye to progress to the quarterfinals.

With her win, Deepika ensured India’s challenge in Archery continued at the the ongoing 2020 Tokyo olympics. In quarter-finals, he will take on top seed and favourite An San of South Korea later on Friday.
