The aim of a swimmers is to cover a pre designated distance in fastest possible time.

There are four categories (Breaststroke,  Butterfly,  Freestyle and Backstroke) in swimming where individual as well as relay races are held.

Two Indian swimmers have directly qualified for the Olympics for the 1st time in history:

Srihari Natraj in 100m backstroke and Sajan Prakash in 200m butterfly. In Women’s event, Maana Patel got the universality quota place in Women’s 100m backstroke.
