Hong Kong Superseries Tournament – mixed day for Indians

National champion, Sameer Verma cemented his place today as one of the top shuttlers in the world by reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing Hong Kong Superseries tournament. He defeated the Malaysian Wei Feng Chong in straight games 21-17, 23-21.
After winning the first game 21-17 easily, he faced a stiff challenge from Chong who quickly took a 11-5 lead in the second game. But Sameer made a superb comeback and then held his nerve to shut the door on his opponent’s face.
He will be up against recently crowned China Open winner Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark in the semifinal.
However, another Indian in the fray, Ajay Jayaram lost his match today against his opponent Ng Ka Long Angus going down 21-15,21-14.

In the women’s singles Olympic silver medalist, PV Sindhu reached her second consecutive semifinal by defeating Xiaoyu Liang of Singapore 21-17, 21-23, 21-18 in a marathon match in which both athlete’s fitness was tested and Sindhu came on top.

However, just like in the men’s singles, it was a day of mixed fortunes as Saina Nehwal despite making a superb comeback in the second game lost to the home player Ngan Yi Cheung 21-8, 18-21, 21-19.
Saina’s exit from the tournament means that PV Sindhu will qualify for the year ending Dubai Destination Superseries Finals.
