Silver linning for Sameer at Hong Kong open

Hong Kong, Nov 27: It turned out to be a heartbreaking end to Sameer Verma’s dream run at the as the Indian shuttler went down fighting to Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong in the summit clash of the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open Super Series tournament here today.

The 22-year-old, National champion suffered a 14-21, 21-10, 11-21 loss against the local favourite in men’s singles final clash.

For Sameer, ranked 43rd in the world, it was his maiden runners-up finish at the Super Series level. He had defeated world number 3 Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen yesterday to reach the finals.

Sameer and Sindhu reach semis in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 25 Nov: National champion, Sameer Verma cemented his place today as one of the top shuttlers in the world by reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing Hong Kong Super series tournament. He defeated the Malaysian Wei Feng Chong in straight games 21-17, 23-21.
After winning the first game 21-17 easily, he faced a stiff challenge from Chong who quickly took a 11-5 lead in the second game. But Sameer made a superb comeback and then held his nerve to shut the door on his opponent’s face.
He will be up against recently crowned China Open winner Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark in the semifinal.
However, another Indian in the fray, Ajay Jayaram lost his match today against his opponent Ng Ka Long Angus going down 21-15,21-14.
 
In the women’s singles Olympic silver medalist, PV Sindhu reached her second consecutive semifinal by defeating Xiaoyu Liang of Singapore 21-17, 21-23, 21-18 in a marathon match in which both athlete’s fitness was tested and Sindhu came on top.
 
However, just like in the men’s singles, it was a day of mixed fortunes as Saina Nehwal despite making a superb comeback in the second game lost to the home player Ngan Yi Cheung 21-8, 18-21, 21-19.
Saina’s exit from the tournament means that PV Sindhu will qualify for the year ending Dubai Destination Superseries Finals.

Good day for India at Hong Kong Open

Hong Kong, 24 Nov: Four out of five Indian left in fray today advanced to the Quarter-finals of Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open 2016.

Sameer Verma, Ajay Jayaram, Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu won their respective matches in contrasting styles to move into the next round.

Meanwhile, HS Pranoy lost to Chong Wei Feng of Malaysia, after winning the first set.
