Mixed day for Indians at All England

Birmingham, Mar 8: P.V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and H.S. Prannoy advanced to the second round of the All England Open Badminton Championships 2017 here on Wednesday.

PV Sindhu beat Denmark’s Mette Poulson in straight games 21-11, 21-10 in 29 minutes. In the round of 16, she will meet Dinar Dyah Ayustine of Indonesia.

Former world number one, Saina Nehwal knocked out defending champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-15, 21-14. In the next round she will meet Fabienne Deprez.

In Mens singles, HS Prannoy won a three set thriller against Quiao Bin of China 17-21, 22-20, 21-19. The match that lasted an hour and 22 minutes. In the next round he will face 7th ranked Houwei Tian. Other, there was disappointment for India in other men’s singles matches as Kidambi Srikanth suffered a first-round exit at the hands of China’s Zhao Junpeng 19-21, 21-19, 12-21. Another Indian in the fray, Ajay Jayaram was sent home packing by Huang Yuxiang of China in straight games 21-19, 21-13.

Earlier in the day, Jakkampudi Meghana and Poorvisha Ram lost to Chinese Taipei pair of Hsu Ya Ching and Wu Ti Jung 21-19. 21-12. In men’s doubles, Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy went down fighting to qualifiers  Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden in a 47 minute encounter.

All England Open Badminton Championships 2017 is being at the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham.

Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy advance to the next round

Macau, 30 Nov: The men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy defeated Chan Alan Yun Lung and Li Kuen Hon of Hong Kong in three games 21-11, 17-21, 21-9 at the $120,000 Macau Grand Prix Gold at Macau on Wednesday.

The Indian pair seeded third here, will face Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya of Singapore in the next round.

In women’s singles, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal beat Indonesia’s Hanna Ramadini in the opening round.

The former World No. 1 was initially trailing 2-5 against the world no. 44, gradually clawed her way back in the opening game to reduce the deficit before restoring parity at 17-17. With none of the players willing to give in the score soon became 20 – 20. Saina lost the first game 21-23 in 24 minutes.

In the second game Saina took an early lead to race to a 9 – 3 lead. At break, she was leading 11 – 6. Saina brought all her experience in to play to close out the second game 21-14 with relative ease.

In the decider, Saina continued her domination to lead 11 – 6 at the break. In the end, the Indian put too good for her Indonesian opponent as she won the third game 21 – 18 to move into the third round.
