Lucknow: India clinched their second Hockey Junior World Cup title after a 15-year-gap, as they beat Belgium 2-1 in the finals of 11th Hockey Junior World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here today.
For India goals came from the sticks of Gurjant Singh in the 8th minute and Simranjeet Singh in the 22nd, while Fabrice van Bockrijck scored for Belgium in the dying moments of the match.
With this win, India became only the second nation after Germany to win the Under-21 title more than once but also became the first nation to win the hockey junior World Cup at home. India had won their previous Under-21 world title in 2001 in Hobart, Australia.
Earlier in the day, six time winners and defending champions Germany hammered Australia 3-0 to secure the third spot on the podium.
Union Sports Minister Shri Vijay Goel has congratulated Indian Hockey Team for their splendid performance and announced cash prize of Rs 3,00,000/- for each player.
