Wuhan, Apr 27: Rio Games silver medallist P V Sindhu notched up a 21-14, 21-15 win over unseeded Japanese Aya Ohori to sail into the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships here at at the Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium on Thursday.
The third ranked player decimated her opponent in the World with another clinical performance in the second round match that lasted just 40 minutes. Sindhu had defeated Indonesia ‘s Dinar Dyah Ayustine 21-8, 21-18 in the first round of the continental Championship.
However, In the men’s event, it was curtains for Ajay Jayaram after losing 19-21, 10-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Jen Hao. The Indian had caused a major upset in the first round,when he defeated fifth seed Tian Houwei of China.
The 21-year-old Sindhu is now the only Indian left in fray. In the quarterfinals, she will take on He Bingjiao of China.
London Games bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, HS Prannoy and the doubles pairs are already out of the tournament, following their loss on the opening day yesterday.
