New Delhi, 02 Apr: PV Sindhu defeated Olympic champion Carolina Marin in the women’s singles final to win her maiden Indian Open Super Series title on Sunday.
Sindhu, who won the TOISA badminton player of the year as well as overall player of the year awards, avenged her Olympic final defeat to Marin in an imperious fashion with a straight game 21-19, 21-16 win at a packed Siri Fort Sports Complex.
This was the Sindhu’s Second Successive victory over the top seed since her loss to Carolina in the famous 2016 Rio Olympics final. Sindhu had also beaten Carolina in the Dubai World Super series Finals in December 2016. However, this was the Olympic silver medallist Sindhu’s second Super series title after also winning the China Open in November 2016.
Only two other Indians — Saina Nehwal (women’s singles) and Kidambi Srikanth (men’s singles) — have won the India Open previously, both clinching their respective titles in 2015.
World No. 5 Sindhu, who was seeded third in the tournament, bettered her record to 4-5 against the World No.3 Carolina Marin.
In Men’s Singles, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark downed Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen 21-13, 21-10. Sunday’s win is Dane’s first Indian Open title, after he had finished runners up in 2015 and 2016.
In the all-Chinese mixed-doubles final, defending champions Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong beat Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen 22-24, 21-14, 21-17.
In the women’s doubles final, Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto beat their Japanese compatriots Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao 16-21, 21-19, 21-10 to win the title.
In an all-Indonesian affair, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo beat Ricky Karanda Suwardi and Angga Pratama 21-11, 21-15.
