Lucknow: Following matches were played on the 7th day of the ongoing 11th Junior Hockey World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here on Wednesday.
The first match of the day was played between Japan and Egypt in 13-16 classification game. After playing out a goalless first half, Koji Yamasaki’s goal in the 41st minute proved to be the difference between the two sides. Japan will now meet South Korea in the 13-14 classification game on Friday.
In the last match of the day, South Korea edged out Canada 2 – 1. Park Joohan Converted a penalty corner in the 21st minute to put South Koreans ahead. A filed goal by Oh Seyong in the 26th minute helped Asian team double the lead. Canadian captain Brandon Pereira scored of a penalty corner within couple of minutes, but in the end his goal could only reduce the margin of loss for the Canadians.
South Africa beat first timers Austria 4 – 2 in 9 – 12 classification match. Austria, who are coached by former India coach Cedric D’Souza, took the lead with a stunning solo goal courtesy of Franz Lindengrun, but strikes from Matthew de Sousa and Courtney Halle put South Africa ahead at half time. In the second half, Ryan Crowe and Nqobile Ntuli scored for the African team, while Leon Thörnblom scored for the Austrians. Today’s win ensured that South Africa will now better their best ever Junior World Cup finish of 11th, achieved at the 2001 event in Hobart, Australia, even if they lose their 9-10 classification match against New Zealand on Saturday.
In another 9-12 classification match, New Zealand beat last minute entrants Malaysia 3-1. Oliver Logan (6’), Robbie Capizzi (56′) and Sam Lane scored for the Junior Black Sticks, whereas Firdaus Omar successfully converted a penalty corner for Malaysia.
