Mohali: All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin (57*) alongwith Ravindra Jadeja rescued India from a tricky situation in the, while chasing England’s 1st innings score of 283. Ashwin had been involved in two useful partnerships, first adding 48 runs for the sixth wicket with Virat Kohli and then an unbroken 67 runs partnership with Jadeja, as India ended second day at 271 for six.
Earlier this morning, Mohammed Shami removed both the overnight batsmen in space of 11 balls as the vistors ended thier firsa innings after adding 15 runs to their overnight total. For India, Shami took 3 wickets for 63, whereas Jayant, Umesh and jadeja picked 2 wickets each.
In reply, Indian openers took the score to 39, before Vijay edged one to Bairstow of the bowling of Stokes. In-form Pujara then joined Parthiv Patel as the two took India’s score to 60 for one at lunch. Patel departed after lunch on when the score was 73. He was trapped LBW by Rashid for 42. From there on it now usual Pujara – Kohli show till tea. India went to tea at 148 for two. Just when it looked that these two will take the match away from the visitors, a Pujara was caught in the deep by Woakes of a Rashid’s long hop. Before, Pujara fell for 51, his 11th test fifty, he had added 75 runs with Kohli.
Soon, India found themselves from 148 for two at tea to 156 for five, as they lost three wicktes for 8 runs. Rahane, was trapped in front of wicket by Rashid without scoring, debutant Karun Nair got runout for 4, after a mixup with Kohli. Ashwin and Kohli added 48 runs before Kohli departed for 62 – his 14th Test fifty, as he nicked one to keeper of Stokes, as India were 204 for six. From hereon, Ashwin incompany Jadeja added 67 useful runs to take India 12 runs short of England’s 1st innings score.
