Mohamed Hussamuddin – lone silver lining at 68th Strandja Memorial boxing

Sofia, Feb 27: Mohamed Hussamuddin lost a keenly-contested final of the men’s bantamweight (56kg) category to settle for a silver medal at the 68th Strandja Memorial boxing tournament here in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The boxer from Pune’s Army Sport Institute put up a spirited fight against 2013 European Championship silver medallist Mykola Butsenko of Ukraine before going down 2-3 to settle for the silver late on Sunday evening.

Among other Indians in the fray, Amit Phangal lost in the semi-finals of the men’s Light Flyweight (49kg) division and Meena Kumari Maisnam went down in the last four stage of the women’s 54kg class to settle for the bronze.

India finished with three medals fom the tournament, where it had sent a team of 15 boxers (10 men and five women).

India’s women boxers finish 3rd at the 6th Nation’s Cup in Serbia

Vrbas, Jan 15: Indian women boxing team finished commendable 3rd at the 6th Nation’s Cup here on Sunday.

continued to impress as four of them, including former World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi (48kg), entered the finals of the 6th Nation’s Cup in the Vrbas, Serbia where the country is now assured of six medals.

Sarjubala, the reigning national champion, defeated local favourite Gayane Panyan to enter the summit clash.

The others, who made the final cut are Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg) and Pooja (69kg). Seema Poonia is also through to the final without fighting a single bout so far as her category features only three boxers.

Priyanka, on the other hand, got the better of Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volosenko, while Pooja also triumphed over a Kazakh rival in Valentina Khalzova.

Meanwhile, in the semifinals on Saturday, former Asian Games bronze-medallist Kavita Goyat will square off against Kazakhstan’s Dariga Shakimova. Another Indian to make the semifinals is Neeraja, who defeated Greece’s Aik Koutsogeorgopoulou.

She will next be up against Sweden’s Katrin Noren in the semifinals.

The tournament is the first for Indian women boxers under the tutelage of new coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu, who served as the men’s coach for more than two decades.

Earlier in the day, riding on fine centuries by Baba Indrajith (138) and Abhinav Mukund (122), Tamil Nadu declared their second innings at 356 for six.

Sachin Singh wins gold at the AIBA Youth World Championships

Sachin, is also a World Junior bronze-medallist, was coached at the Hawa Singh Academy in his initial years.

In the 91 kgs category, Naman Tanwar had to settle for a bronze medal after losing his bout to Cuba’s Dainer Christian Justiz, yesterday.

India, thus finished the 2016 edition of the Championship with one gold and one bronze. Youth World Championship is widely considered a testing-ground for the potential elite-level future boxers.

The President of the Boxing Federation of India announced cash award of Rs one lakh for Sachin and Rs 25,000 to Naman for their achievements in winning medals for the country.

1st Elite Women’s National Boxing Championship – Day 6

Haridwar, 24 Nov: Finals of all 10 weight categories of the 1st Elite Women’s National Boxing Championship were held today at Police Line, Roshanabad, Haridwar. The event was organised by Uttarakhand Boxing Association.

Former World championship silver medallist Sarjubala Devi, three-time National School Games champion Soniya Chahal, Simranjit Kaur of Punjab won gold medals in their respective weight categories.

In a major upset Arjuna Awardee and eight times National Champion Kavita Chahal lost to Seema Poonia of Railways in the Heavy weight Category.

Haryana won the overall team championship with 6 gold medals. Hosts Uttrakhand won three medals with Krishna Thapa in Light-Flyweight (46-49 kg) and Kamla Bist in Feather-weight category (57kg) winning silver medals each, while Poonam Bist won bronze medal in the Flyweight category (51 kg).
